Curatorial Essay
Angel Waiting 229 forms part of The Book of Angels, Ovidiu Kloșka’s long-term series dedicated to the subtle experience of presence. Rather than illustrating angels as visible beings, the series explores the conditions through which an unseen presence gradually becomes perceptible within painting itself.
The composition unfolds through translucent layers, luminous passages and gestural traces that remain suspended between appearance and disappearance. Forms are suggested rather than defined, allowing the image to retain its openness while inviting prolonged contemplation. Every painted interval participates equally in the construction of meaning, whether densely worked or almost silent.
Within Ovidiu Kloșka’s artistic practice, beauty emerges through improbable configurations that gradually achieve an inevitable internal coherence. Colour, rhythm, transparency, gesture and material develop together until the painting discovers its own visual equilibrium. Presence is therefore not represented but allowed to emerge through these relationships.
The act of waiting becomes central to the work. Waiting is understood not as inactivity but as attentive openness—a condition in which perception slows and increasingly subtle relationships become visible. The angel appears neither as narrative nor symbol but as a quiet manifestation of awareness that remains deliberately incomplete.
Light never functions as external illumination. It originates within the painted surface itself, gently revealing and concealing the image at the same time. Dark passages provide depth rather than opposition, allowing the composition to breathe through the balance between visible and invisible.
Extended observation continually reveals new relationships between colour, texture and gesture. The painting resists immediate interpretation, unfolding instead through sustained attention. Meaning remains open, inviting every viewer to participate in the experience of perception.
Angel Waiting 229 exemplifies the mature visual language of The Book of Angels, where painting becomes a place in which silence, light and material converge into the quiet experience of presence.
