Curatorial Essay

Rembrandt was the first great artist who shook Ovidiu Kloșka’s axes of reference. The encounter was so profound that it temporarily brought his own painting into question. How could a painter reveal the essence of things so completely with so little light?

For years, Kloșka studied Rembrandt’s chiaroscuro, brushwork and organization of pictorial space, repeatedly painting at the limit between darkness and light. What began as doubt gradually became a source of strength: a small inner spark that continued to grow until it could become its own nocturnal language.

Night Flowers for Rembrandt emerges from that long dialogue. The flowers are not simply a still life, but a kind of nocturnal resonance — a contemporary response to the presence of a great predecessor. In their vicinity, light no longer behaves merely as illumination. It becomes energy, moving through the compressed present while the dust of another era seems to settle across the artist’s hands, eyelids and brushes.

The painting inhabits the threshold between inheritance and transformation. Rembrandt remains present, but the work does not attempt to reproduce his language. Instead, the influence becomes matter, gesture, memory and atmosphere, transformed through Kloșka’s own pictorial vocabulary.

Somewhere within this encounter, an old and luminous piano seems to begin composing a new Bach nocturne — not as quotation, but as an impossible continuation of a conversation between painting, music, darkness and time.

Why this Work Matters

Night Flowers for Rembrandt occupies a significant place within Ovidiu Kloșka’s dialogue with art history. It transforms admiration, doubt and artistic confrontation into a new pictorial event. Rembrandt’s darkness becomes not an aesthetic to imitate, but a territory through which another painter discovers his own light.

The flowers become carriers of memory, while the nocturnal atmosphere creates a space where past and present coexist. The work ultimately proposes that influence is not repetition: it is a force that can be absorbed, transformed and released as something unexpectedly new.
